SUPAY

In the Andean mythological universe there was balance, good and bad, feminine and masculine, darkness and light, north and south, sky and earth.Balance would determine coexistence of humanity and nature.

The world was dividedin three regions: Alaj Pacha (or upper world) where father Inti is king, surrounded by the moon, stars and planets. The Akaj Pacha (terrestrial kingdom) where mother earth Pachamama lives among the spirits of the mountains and hills, animals an humans. And the Manqa Pacha (underground world) kingdom of Supay, surrounded by the ‘enchants’ and other spirits. Every layer represents a time, future, present and past, all existing in harmony.

But one day from a far away world, crossing the ocean in strange ships arrived the angels, commanded by Saint Michael Archangel, with pale masks and cold eyes like with no emotion, they arrived with a cross in the shields and a sword in the back. At the start there were a few, and they were welcomed, but when they knew about the gold and silver, them eyes turned on, the swords were held in the front hands, and there were more angels, and they all came to look for the sacred minerals, and to have it, they would step over whom ever would stand in front.

The Andean gods watch them with patience at the start, but when they heard the pledge of his protégées, organised an army to stop the invaders. Condor Jipiña, the puma and Pachamama, humans and the other Andean animals commanded by Supay and Jukumari started the first attack. But after many battles, the Andean army lost the war, the angles were too many, they capture Supay, and crowned the now prisoner Pachamama like her queen, and called her Mary to keep control of the rebel humans, whom dressed her on stars, sat her on the moon and gave her a crown made out of sunshine.The angels tortured Supay and burnt his body, and now with the unrecognisable face outcast him to the deepest tunnels inside a mountain, and told stories about him being a ghost, a demon called Lucifer, for the new generations learn to fear him.

Hundred of years have gone past, and the angels have now extracted up to the last drop of gold and silver from the mountains, the miners, slave humans, working at the heart of a mountain, found an heretic shadow, and squalid and ash coloured skin demon, with red eyes and two horns stuck in the forehead.

The young ones were scared, because this shadow came from his darkest dreams, there was the image of the devil they had always feared, but the grandfathers recognised him, from old stories that had been past generation by generation. The miners gave him food, and dressed him, and gave him coca leaves to gain back strength.

They return him to his throne in the Manqa Pacha. The silversmiths made him a mask, one that would put fear on his enemies, with sacred animals on his clothes, and gold and silver, as his armour.

Supay returns to the Akaj Pacha, and now will be at the head of a new age, but for that he will have to lead the revolution against his most feared adversary.‘How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!’

SUPAY

En la vision mitologica andina existia balance, el bien y el mal, femenino y masculino, oscuridad y luz, norte y sur, cielo y tierra.

El balance determinaria la cohexistencia de los pueblos, y no era perturbado por la pelea de ninguno de sus pesos.

El mundo estaba dividido en tres regiones: En el Alaj Pacha (o mundo de arriba) reinaba el padre sol Inti, la luna. estrellas y los planetas. En el Akaj Pacha (mundo terrenal) reina la madre tierra Pachamama, los espiritus de las montañas y cerros, los animales y seres humanos. En el Manqha Pacha (reindo subterraneo) reyna Supay, y alli mora junto a los anchanchos y otros espiritus subterraneos. Cada estrato representa un tiempo, el reino de arriba el futuro, el terrenal el presente y el de abajo el pasado, todos convivian en armonia.

Pero un dia, llegando de un mundo lejano, en extrañas naves cruzando el océano, llegaron los angles, a la cabeza de el Arcangel Miguel, seres de piel clara y ojos fijos apagados sin emocion, llegaron empuñando cruces en el frente, pero en las espaldas en la otra mano, llevaban espadas. Fueron pocos al principio y fueron bien recibidos, pero al saber del oro, y la plata los ojos se les encendieron, y cambiaron de manos mostrando las espadas. rLuego llegaron mas angeles, y todos buscaban el oro y la plata, sedientos de su energia, hambrientos por el metal, para obtenerlo pasarian sobre quien fuese, hombres, mujeres,ancianos y niños.

Los dioses andinos miraban todo ello con paciencia, hasta que un dia convocados por aquellos a quienes protegian y canzados de tanto abuso, organizaron ejercitos y empezaron marchando para frenar el saqueo. Y asi partio Supay, encabezando el primer ataque, junto a el peleaban Jukumari el oso, Condor Jipiña, el puma y Pachamama, y los seres humanos y animales andinos.

Pero luego de muchas luchas los ejercitos andinos cayeron, los angeles no eran muchos pero pudieron mas, y capturaron a Supay, y a Pachamama, y la coronaron vestida de estrellas sobre un trono con forma de luna, y corona de sol, y le llamaron Maria para que los humanos la adoraran y asi mantener el control. Y torturaron a Supay y lo tiraron al fuego, y ya con el rostro desfigurado le clabaron dos cuernos en la cabeza y le llamaron Lucifer, y lo encerraron en las profundidades de un cerro, y contaron nuevas leyendas sobre el proscrito rey, y las nuevas generaciones aprenderian que quien esta alli abajo no es un dios pero un demonio enemigo.

Centenares de años pasaron, y los angeles habian consumido, hasta el ultimo gramo de oro y plata en el mundo terrenal, pero un dia por casualidad, encontraron un cerro oculto en el centro de los Andes, cubierto por tierra, pero con un corazon hecho de plata, y trajeron su ahora ejercito esclavo de humanos, y los pusieron a trabajar, pero no solo encontraron minerales en el subsuelo, pero tambien una sombra, una esqualida y negruzca sombra oliendo a cenizas, con ojos rojos y voz ronca, y en la cabeza, dos largos cuernos clavados en la cien.

A los mas jovenes se les encrispo la piel, y se les congelo el aliento, porque de sus mas temidas pesadillas, alli estaba la mismisima figura del diablo, pero los ancianos lo reconocieron, casi ciegos y muertos de hambre y sed lo reconocieron, como venido de las antiguas leyendas que los antiguos contaban; lo confortaron, lo visitieron, los alimentaron e invitaron a recobrar las fuerzas mascando hojas de coca y le devolvieron su trono. Una mascara fue forjada, para sembrar el miedo, animales sagrados en sus vestidos, y plata, pura plata como armadura.

Supay regresa al Akaj Pacha, y ahora encabeza un nuevo reino, al frente del un nuevo ejercito, un pueblo sublevado, y va a enfrentar a su mas temido adversario. 'Como has caído del cielo! oh lucero de la mañana, hijo de la aurora! Has sido derribado por tierra! Tú, quien debilitabas a las naciones!!'.
